An Open Letter to Doctors, Teachers and Educators

Allan Wohrnitz (BSc)

Numerous reports from parents have directed my attention to concerns about the recommendation and prescription of mind altering and addictive drugs to normal children who have learning problems, are inattentive, hyperactive or destructive in the classroom.

After 2 years of thorough research and consultation with various authorities in the education, medical and legal fields, I have found out that the above problem is being allowed to continue because no one has stood up to make known the truth about learning and behavior problems and put a check on the abuse of children and the violation of their fundamental human rights.

People are made to believe that, ADHD is a genetically inherited neurological problem and medication is the correct treatment. The medication commonly used is Methylphenidate (trade name Ritalin and Concerta).

Here are some facts to consider before attempting to suspect, diagnose and prescribe mind bending drugs for ADHD.

Is ADHD a disease?

ADHD is NOT a disease. It has been invented by psychiatrists and was voted into existence in 1987. One cannot diagnose ADHD from a psychological assessment. A psychologist is not trained and qualified to diagnose neurological diseases. Nor is a GP or paediatrician. A doctor who uses the assessment results as the basis of diagnosis is not doing his job as a doctor. If there is a suspicion of a disorder or disease, the doctor is bound by the Health Act to follow very specific procedures of diagnosis before even suggesting drugs as a treatment. He even has to advise the patient that there are options of other treatments before the patient can consent to any treatment he/she chooses. The risks and treatment options available. must even be explained to the child.

Is ADHD a neurological disease?

ADHD is NOT a neurological disease. There are no valid tests to prove the disease exists. There is only speculation that there are neurotransmitter imbalances. These imbalances cannot be measured and furthermore, the correct neurotransmitter balances cannot be shown. For a neurological disease to exist, only a neurologist is trained to diagnose such diseases and this he does by accepted physical tests of the nervous system and will identify defects in the nervous system. If he cannot show physical defects, then by definition there is no disease. NO DISEASE = NO TREATMENT.

The drug Methylphenidate (trade name Ritalin or Concerta) is the same chemical structure as the street drug Speed. It has highly addictive properties and reports from the United Nations in 1971 have been published warning of its highly addictive properties and high potential for abuse. At that time it became classified as a Schedule II drug (in the same class as amphetamines and cocaine). Between 1971 and the mid 1980's, the consumption of methylphenidate decreased until ADHD was voted into existence in 1987 and its consumption increased rapidly. Methylphenidate causes brain damage and atrophy. If you are shown brain scans as ”proof" that children with smaller brains have ADHD, ask first if those children tested were on drugs before the scans and ask to be shown scans of children who have never been treated with psychotropic (mind bending) drugs.

Is ADHD genetic?

ADHD is NOT genetic. To show a genetic problem or identify a gene, one has to show and demonstrate the ”sequence of nucleotides (codons) that is tied to a specific behavior". To date no one has come up with any specifics. The conclusion that it is genetic is also based on speculations and it is suspected that ADHD might be genetic. It has now become ”fact" that ADHD is 80% genetic. Yet no codons have been identified. Advocating such as ”facts" is misleading the public.

In Holland, it is forbidden to promote ADHD as a brain disease due to inadequate evidence of the existence of such a “disease.”

At the ADHD Consensus Conference in November 18, 1998, the Panel, in its final statement announced: “...we do not have an independent, valid test for ADHD, and there are no data to indicate that ADHD is due to a brain malfunction.”

Therefore to promote that ADHD is a disease and suggesting, recommending or prescribing drugs for a non-existent disease can be construed as negligence in legal terms. Anyone found doing so could be committing a crime punishable by law. A person who is not qualified to suggest, recommend, diagnose or treat a disease for which he is not trained or not registered with the correct professional board could be accused of medical malpractice; for example, a teacher advising or suggesting a parent to increase the dose of medication on her child, or pressurizing a parent to drug their child as a pre-requisite to allowing the child at the school.

I urge you to treat this open letter with seriousness and responsibility. The majority of parents do not want to drug their children. The majority of teachers want to be able to educate the children. But if any are encountering problems with children, there exist drug free solutions that can handle the condition. One does not have to accept or cope with the problem. The problem CAN BE HANDLED. If a parent refuses to drug their child, one can look to the drug free options available.

This website will guide you to find solutions for a hyperactive child without the need and use of mind-altering drugs. Those solutions are being used by thousands of people with outstanding results.

It is time to acknowledge that the use of drugs to treat children is a very dangerous option and a high risk and to make known and to use workable drug free options. Recommending drugs as treatment can also be a violation of the child's and parents human rights.
